Using keyboard to control dialog box

April 17th, 2008 by santana Mac OS X Tips

Do you still use the trackpad or the mouse to click one of the button that s not highlighted on a dialogbox? For example, when you close the Safari (using Command + Q) which has more than 1 tab ( Assuming you’ve set the Preference to warn you whenenver you are closing the browser that has more than 1 tab), you will end up with a warning dialog box asking you if you are sure to close the browser.

The default button is the Quit button which is highlighted, and the Cancel button has a semi highlighted surround it.

If you press Enter/Return immediately, you wil accept the ‘Quit’ command and close the browser. What about if you change your mind that you don’t want to close it?

Just press Spacebar. :)

Sometime there are 3 button, i.e. ‘Don’t Save’, ‘Cancel’, and ‘Save’. To accept the ‘Don’t Save’, just press Spacebar, to Cancel just press ‘ESC’ and to save it, just press Enter/Return.

What about if there is no button is highlighted? Simple, just use our tab key to navigate it :)

When I press the on/off button on my macbook I am presented with 4 options:
    - Restart
    - Sleep
    - Cancel
    - Shutdown (highlighted)

I cannot use the tab key to navigate through the options and I’m forced to use my trackpad/mouse. Any ideas on how to use the keyboard?

    Hi.

I forgot to mention that you have to go to System Preference > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts and check the ‘In windows and dialogs, press Tab to move the keyboard focus between: All controls’

    Regards
